The Role and Function of Apocryphal Narratives of the Early Life of Mary in Medieval Art and Literature
The Protevangelium of James (2nd Century), the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew (6th Century) and the Nativity of Mary (9th Century) form the so-called “Nativity of Mary” narratives. They relate the birth and early life of Mary, her marriage with Joseph, her pregnancy and the virginal birth
of Jesus with the visit of the midwives. Later incorporated into the Golden Legend and preaching manuals, these narratives exerted considerable influence upon medieval art and literature, especially nourishing Marian cult.
The Iscal 2016 provides a precious opportunity to enhance your knowledge on the transmission paths and mechanisms behind the reception of one of the most widespread apocryphal motifs in medieval art and literature. Medieval historians and specialists in medieval art history will conduct the different sessions, allowing students to appreciate the complexity and the richness of the reception of apocryphal narratives in the Middle Ages.
